Funk Guitar Jammin By Chris Amelar

Chris is the author of one of the most extensive rock method books ever, titled Mastering Rock Guitar. He’s a regular contributor to Guitar School and Guitar World and has been an instructor at the National Guitar Workshop in Connecticut for eight years. He’s a busy clinician, but finds time to play with a number of bands around New York City. Chris has dissected the chops-heavy styles of Al DiMeola and John Petrucci.

These book/audio play-along tracks contain ten original, full-band tracks to jam with, in the tempos, feels, keys, and styles used by today’s hottest players. Book includes breakdowns of each track, chord charts, full-form analysis, advice for improvising, and more. The accompanying CD or cassette features the killer-sounding tracks played out.

Blues By The Bar By Chris Hunt

It covers Chicago style blues – in places strongly reminiscent of Albert King and Roy Buchanan. The riffs are constructed in a “call and response” – but there’s nothing basic about them. They are all usable, and many of them are surprisingly easy to play. There’s nothing corny or academic in this book – it sounds fresh. These are real licks, not just scales or fretboard tricks. No open strings are used, so the riffs can be used in any key. In a very few places the tab isn’t completely accurate, but even where its wrong its close enough for any guitarist to work out the correct version. The quality of the CD is excellent.

I think about half of the licks would be technically difficult for a beginner. But, even a beginner could buy it now and grow into it. All licks are played in context (with a backing band) and are in the key of G. The student is left to transpose them to other keys – which I think is fine. The book is organized by the bars in a 12-Bar blues. Bars 1 & 2 in G7, 3 & 4 in C7 (quick change format) and so on. Licks are arranged in that order. This seems to me to be more useful than jumping from one lick in C to another in F# with tempo changes, etc. This book is much less helter skelter. I also like Hunt’s style. It’s not immediately identifiable with one player or a certain approach to the blues. Very contemporary and a good mixture of notes from the major and minor pentatonic scales. One of the best instructional packages on the blues that I’ve come across.

This is an EXCELLENT book to begin playing Funk on a bass guitar. It has plenty of classic songs you can learn to play, plenty of techniques such as thumb and finger slaps along with pops. It also gives you an introduction as to how Funk started, how to practice, along with a CD to help tune your bass from ear.

Classic songs that are really fun to play, and you learn a lot from it. This book makes you a better bass player. If you are a beginner, this is definitely a useful book. If you are trying to learn to slap, this book has plenty of great excersizes that really help.

The book is for beginners and intermediate players, but beware, you’ll have your work cut out for you, there’s a lot of stuff in here to keep you busy for a long time.
